Google has announced that its Gemini-powered AI automations will be available in Google Workspace starting next month. This marks another significant step in Google’s long-term strategy to integrate AI agents into its widely-used cloud productivity suite, which includes popular tools like Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Meet, Google Sheets, and Google Slides.
According to Google, the move is designed to help organizations streamline workflows and increase productivity by leveraging AI at scale. Google Workspace currently serves over 8 million paying customers and holds an impressive 84.95% share of the cloud-based work apps market, according to Thrive, an online marketing firm.
Aparna Pappu, Vice President and General Manager of Google Workspace, emphasized the company’s gradual approach to AI adoption. She described their method as a “crawl, walk, run” strategy aimed at making AI agents accessible to a broader range of users.
“Think of AI agents as building blocks where users train their assistants to understand their unique workflows,” Pappu explained during a Q&A session at the Gemini at Work event in New York. “We’re moving towards creating trained AI assistants that evolve into fully functional AI agents.”
Earlier this week, Google announced that its standalone Gemini chat app, powered by the advanced Gemini AI model, is now integrated into Workspace for Business, Enterprise, and Frontline customers. This integration allows users to perform tasks such as summarizing emails, retrieving information from Google Drive documents, and generating custom charts in Sheets using natural language prompts.
Unlike other AI platforms that focus on specific sectors like sales or marketing, Google Workspace caters to a diverse audience. The Gemini AI integration is part of a broader initiative to make AI tools more versatile and accessible.
Pappu noted that Google has been experimenting with AI agents for some time, highlighting the AI Teammate demo shown at the Google I/O developer conference in May. “AI Teammates are designed to complete specific tasks, and our goal is to scale this across enterprises, with Workspace leading the charge,” she said.
Google plans to start rolling out Gemini-powered workflow automations in Workspace by October. These automations will enable users to set up tasks that automatically read, categorize, and act on emails or documents. For example, if an email contains an invoice, Gemini can recognize it as a finance-related document and route it to the appropriate team for payment.
This type of automation is one of the key components in building fully functional AI agents, which can handle increasingly complex tasks across various workflows.
AI agents have become a focal point for many organizations looking to boost employee productivity. In recent months, several companies, including Slack, Salesforce, Asana, and Adobe, have integrated AI agents into their platforms. Meta has also announced plans to allow users to create AI agents for WhatsApp and Messenger.
Given Google’s vast customer base, it’s no surprise that the tech giant is moving towards offering AI agents to its Workspace users. Many businesses, from small startups to large enterprises, rely on Google Workspace for their daily operations, and the addition of AI agents will help streamline tasks and improve efficiency.
Google’s Gemini at Work event showcased how the company’s flagship AI models, including Gemini, are transforming workplace productivity. Pappu shared insights from customers who reported improved employee satisfaction and retention due to Gemini’s ability to handle mundane tasks.
“It’s not just about saving time,” Pappu said. “It’s about removing the frustration of repetitive tasks, allowing employees to focus on more meaningful work.”
Customers using Gemini within Google Workspace have reported significant boosts in productivity, particularly when it comes to eliminating time-consuming tasks like translating code or managing documents.
Pappu concluded by noting that Gemini’s impact extends beyond large enterprises. “Even smaller businesses can become more competitive with Gemini because they can access expert-level capabilities without hiring consultants,” she said.
Google’s push to integrate Gemini AI into Workspace signals a future where AI agents will play an essential role in improving workplace efficiency. With workflow automations set to roll out in October, businesses of all sizes can look forward to streamlined operations and enhanced productivity powered by Google’s advanced AI technology.
